A.P. English III Lesson Plans for September 26 – 30, 2-16

M: Introduction to Gone with the Wind: “It’s not about the Civil War, it’s about people with gumption.” Margaret Mitchell’s approach to her masterpiece.

T: Administration of ACT college entrance exam.

W & Th: The students will be in the Plato Lab writing their comparison papers over Our Town and White Oak.

F: SAT-based vocabulary Lesson 5: Jobs and Professions.

A.P. English III Lesson Plans for September 19 – 23, 2016

M – Th: To extend a summer reading assignment, the students will view the play, Our Town, in preparation for writing a comparison paper over 20th-century Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire and 21st-century White Oak, Texas.

F: The students will be in the computer lab preparing a draft of their summer reading comparison paper.

A.P. English III Lesson Plans for September 12 – 16, 2016

M & T: The students will present their rhetorical analysis of selected editorial cartoons to the class.

W: Mr. Hale will distribute ACT information and STAAR test results to the class.

Th: The students will complete a test on the art of rhetoric.

F: The students will complete their rhetorical analysis of editorial cartoons presentations to the class.

A.P. English III Lesson Plans for August 28 – September 2, 2016

M: The students will complete the English Universal Screener; notes and discussion of Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle and rhetorical appeals.

T: Distribute SAT Vocabulary 2. Analysis of editorial cartoons and the rhetorical appeals used by the cartoonists.

W & Th: The students will research and choose editorial cartoons in the computer lab for analysis and presentation to the class.

F: Test over The Art of Rhetoric notes. SAT Vocabulary 2 due.

A.P. English III Lesson Plans for August 22 – 26, 2016

All Classes: For the first week of school, classroom procedures will be discussed briefly at the beginning of class. The remainder of the class period will focus on academics.

M: The students will be introduced to the reading survey (due Wednesday), SAT-based vocabulary (due Friday), and the study of analytical literary terms. Distribute English Department policy and A.P. contracts.

T: The students will take the first portion of the summer reading tests.

W: Reading Survey due at the beginning of class. The students will take the second portion of the summer reading tests.

Th: The students will be assigned the Postcard from Summer reading project.

F: SAT-based vocabulary exercise due at beginning of class. The students will be introduced  the study of rhetoric and the three rhetorical appeals.

The Crucible 

M: The students will be introduced to the contributing factors of the witch hysteria that swept Salem, Massachusetts the winter of 1692. Notes and discussion.

T: The students will complete the A.P. Literary Terms Test, J – Z.

W: Mrs. Donna Jennings will be in all classes assisting the students with ACT preparation.

Th: The students will be introduced to the Act I vocabulary of The Crucible and will read and discuss pages 3 – 7.

F: Mrs. Donna Jennings will be in all classes assisting the students with schedules for the 2016 – 2017 school year.

T – W: In groups, the students will explicate The Raven, recognizing the sound devices alliteration and repetition, and the four recurring themes in the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

Th – F: The students will do research to write a proposal to produce a movie version of The Raven. The proposal will include setting and location, casting, music, set decoration, and props.

Gothic Literature

M: The students will complete SAT-based vocabulary Lesson 16 Mystery. Due Friday

T: The students will view a video lecture by Elliot Engel, Ph.D, on how events in the life of Edgar Allan Poe influenced his works and complete its accompanying lesson.

W: The students will discuss and take notes on sound devices and the four recurring themes in the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

Th: The students will read and explicate the poem, Annabelle Lee.

F: The students will read The Raven.
