M: School Holiday

T: The students will read pages 103 – 110  and discuss “shedding daylight on the dream.” Answer study guide questions  5 – 7.

W: The students will complete the Character Test.

Th: The students will read pages 111 – 118 and discuss the changes in Gatsby’s lifestyle since his reunion with Daisy. Answer study guide questions 8 – 10 and complete chapter six vocabulary review.

F: The students will complete the chapter 6 vocabulary quiz and will read and discuss pages 119 – 125.

M: The students will read pages 85 – 96; notes and discussion the the waining significance of the green light in Gatsby’s life.

T: The students will read pages 97 – 111; notes and discussion on the validity of Gatsby’s previous autobiography. Compete chapter six study guide.

W: The students will read pages 112 to 122 and complete the Twenty Questions exercise.

Th: The students will complete SAT vocabulary Lesson 19 Of  Loves, Hates, and Fears.

F: The students will view an installment of Gone with the Wind, noting examples of survival.

M: TIOBE The students will read pgs. 111 – 117 and identify examples of epigram, irony, and pun. Notes and discussion.

T: TIOBE The students will complete the Act III study guide.

W & Th: Vic Lit Intro  The students will read pgs. 946 – 952 and complete an exercise over

  • The relationship between place and literature
  • How literature shapes and reflects society
  • The relationship of the writer to tradition

The Great Gatsby

M: The students will read pages 61 – 69, noting the diversity of Gatsby’s party guests and the continued speculation about Gatsby’s identity.

T: The students will complete the Acts 1 & 2 quiz. Read pages 70 – 80. Notes and discussion of Gatsby’s autobiography and  the account of Daisy’s early relationship with Gatsby.

W: The students will complete the Act IV study guide.

Th: The students will read pages 81 – 90 and discuss the realization of Gatsby’s dream, identifying it as a turning point.

F: The students will write their own version of the love letter Daisy received from Gatsby on the eve of her wedding to Tom.

M: The students will complete the Act II study guide and assign character roles for Act III. Announce Act II Quiz, including vocabulary, for Thursday, April 14.

T: The students will read and discuss pages 107 – 112, identifying examples of inverted expectation.

W: The students will read pages 113 – 117, identifying examples of epigram and  art for art’s sake.

Th: The students will complete the Act II quiz and the Act III study guide.

F: The students will write an essay  discussing the central pun of the play (Ernest/earnest) and its significance.

W: The students will read pages 90 – 97 and analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Th: The students will read pages 91 – 106 notes and discussion on inverted expectation as a cause of humor.

F: The students will complete the Act II study guide.

M & T: Notes and discussion of pgs. 33 – 38: affair of Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson, the party at NYC apartment, and Nick’s drunkeness.  Point out how Fitzgerald indicates the passage of time. The students will complete the study guide for chapters 1 & 2.

W: The students will read pages 39 – 44, noting the diversity of the guests to establish characterization. Discuss the personalities and the effects of wealth on them.

Th & F: The students will read pages 44 – 79. Notes and discussion on:

  • the representation of the green light
  • the rumors surrounding Jay Gatsby
  • the corruption of the American Dream
