M: The students will complete a test on sound devices and will read The Raven.

T & W: The students will explicate The Raven.

Th: The students will read and take notes about the biographical sketch of Nathaniel Hawthorne and discuss the inherited guilt aspect of his work.

F: The students will view the video of Hawthorne’s life, New England’s Puritan Son, define allegory, and will complete the vocabulary for Young Goodman Brown.

M: The students will complete SAT-based vocabulary Lesson 16 Mystery. Due Friday

T: The students will view a video lecture by Elliot Engel, Ph.D, on how events in the life of Edgar Allan Poe influenced his works and complete its accompanying lesson.

W: The students will discuss and take notes on sound devices and the four recurring themes in the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

Th: The students will read and explicate the poem, Annabelle Lee.

F: The students will read The Raven.

English IV Lesson Plans for February 1 – 5, 2016

Romantic Poetry

M: The students will complete the English IV Universal Screener and make a one-page journal entry.

T & W: The students read the biographical sketch of William Wordsworth, pages 776 – 778 and be introduced to the unit vocabulary on page 779. The students will read “Tintern Abbey,” pgs. 781 – 785, “The World is Too Much With Us,” pg. 790, and “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge,” handout.

Th: The students will complete Critical Reading questions 1 – 3, page 785, and Grammar & Style Lesson # 194.

F:The students will read and complete Elizabeth McCracken’s contemporary commentary on pages 756 – 757 introducing Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. WB pg. 183

M: The students will complete SAT-based Vocabulary Lesson 16. Raven project and narrative essay explained and assigned (due February 10). The student will research folklore about ravens in different cultures (due Thursday).

T: The students will read and discuss The Tell-Tale Heart.

W: Early Release

Th: The students will report to the class the information they gathered from researching ravens in the folklore of different nations and cultures.

F: The students will discuss and take notes over sound devices and read The Raven.

The Romantic Poets

M & T: The students will read the Percy Bysshe Shelley biographical sketch, pg. 867. The student will complete the selections’ Vocabulary Builder. Read and discuss Ozymandias pg. 869, Ode to the West Wind pgs. 870 – 872, and To a Skylark pgs. 873 – 876. Complete Literary Analysis: Imagery assignment.

W: Early Release

Th: The students will complete a test on the elements of the Romantic era poetry and the elements of lyric poetry.

F: The students will read the John Keats bio sketch, pg. 881 and complete the selections’ Vocabulary Builder. Read and discuss On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer pg. 883 and When I Have Fears pg. 885.

M & T: The students will view the motion picture To Kill a Mockingbird, and note particular statements for later critique of diction and syntax. M: Lesson Learned in TKAM Chart due.

Th: The students will view Atticus’s closing argument in the motion picture and complete an exercise evaluating the clarity and coherence of its message on the audience.

F: The students will complete the SAT-based vocabulary Lesson 16.

W: The students will complete the English III Benchmark exam, read “An Appointment in Samara, and complete an irony of situation exercise.

Th: The students will view the Dr. Eliott Engel video on the life of Edgar Allan Poe, the recurring themes in his work, and complete the accompanying exercise.

T: The students will complete the Critical Reading exercise, pg. 845,  for Rime of the Ancient Mariner and begin their journal entries.

 W: The students will take the English IV benchmark exam, read pages 725 -726 and 774 – 775, noting the elements of the romantic tradition and its lyric poetry.

Th: The students will read the Lord Byron biographical sketch, pg. 853 and She Walks in Beauty pg. 855, comparing and contrasting opening and closing lines.

F: The students will read the Percy Bysshe Shelley bio, pg. 867 and Ode to the West Wind, pgs. 870 – 872, comparing imagery in the poem, and inferring from it the changes in the speaker’s life.
