English III Lesson Plans for April 11 – 15, 2016

The Great Gatsby

M: The students will read pages 61 – 69, noting the diversity of Gatsby’s party guests and the continued speculation about Gatsby’s identity.

T: The students will complete the Acts 1 & 2 quiz. Read pages 70 – 80. Notes and discussion of Gatsby’s autobiography and  the account of Daisy’s early relationship with Gatsby.

W: The students will complete the Act IV study guide.

Th: The students will read pages 81 – 90 and discuss the realization of Gatsby’s dream, identifying it as a turning point.

F: The students will write their own version of the love letter Daisy received from Gatsby on the eve of her wedding to Tom.

M: The students will complete the Act II study guide and assign character roles for Act III. Announce Act II Quiz, including vocabulary, for Thursday, April 14.

T: The students will read and discuss pages 107 – 112, identifying examples of inverted expectation.

W: The students will read pages 113 – 117, identifying examples of epigram and  art for art’s sake.

Th: The students will complete the Act II quiz and the Act III study guide.

F: The students will write an essay  discussing the central pun of the play (Ernest/earnest) and its significance.

M: The students will complete the Act 1 Quiz and read pages 62 – 71.

T: The students will read pages 72 – 76 and discuss the irony of John repeating the Ten Commandments and Elizabeth and John’s responses to the existence of witch. Announce Character Test for Thursday.

W: The students will complete the Act II study guide  and the Act III Vocabulary Builder.

Th & F: The students will complete the Character Test. Read pages 77 – 91 and discuss Giles’ motivation for interrupting the court, the characterization of Danforth through the stage directions, and the continuing conflict between Putnam and Paris.

M: Distribute Act II vocabulary. The students will read pages 86 – 89 and identify figurative and connotative meanings.

T: The students will complete a quiz over Act I.

W: The students will read pages 90 – 97 and analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Th: The students will read pages 91 – 106 notes and discussion on inverted expectation as a cause of humor.

F: The students will complete the Act II study guide.

T: Notes and discussion on internal and external conflict.

W: The students will complete a test on the factors contributing to the Salem witch hysteria.

Th: Notes and discussion on the tragic hero and the existing conflicts in 1692 Salem. The students will read pages 47 – 59, focusing on the conflict within the Proctor’s marriage.

F: The students will read pages 60 – 76.

M & T: Notes and discussion of pgs. 33 – 38: affair of Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson, the party at NYC apartment, and Nick’s drunkeness.  Point out how Fitzgerald indicates the passage of time. The students will complete the study guide for chapters 1 & 2.

W: The students will read pages 39 – 44, noting the diversity of the guests to establish characterization. Discuss the personalities and the effects of wealth on them.

Th & F: The students will read pages 44 – 79. Notes and discussion on:

  • the representation of the green light
  • the rumors surrounding Jay Gatsby
  • the corruption of the American Dream

M: The students will be introduced to the contributing factors of the witch hysteria that swept Salem, Massachusetts the winter of 1692. Notes and discussion.

T: The students will complete the A.P. Literary Terms Test, J – Z.

W: Mrs. Donna Jennings will be in all classes assisting the students with ACT preparation.

Th: The students will be introduced to the Act I vocabulary of The Crucible and will read and discuss pages 3 – 7.

F: Mrs. Donna Jennings will be in all classes assisting the students with schedules for the 2016 – 2017 school year.

T: The students will be introduced to the elements of the Jazz Age and the three tenets of the American Dream. Notes and discussion.

W: Mrs. Donna Jennings will be in all classes assisting students with ACT preparation.

Th: The students will read pages 3 – 7 and will discuss the point of view of the narrator, Nick Carraway.
